It’s pretty obvious why you have your carpets professionally cleaned. After all, people track dirt, mud and other debris from outside that gets imbedded and hard to remove with a vacuum cleaner. And removing stains on carpets is more effective with professional equipment. Plus, it’s healthier to have carpets professionally cleaned to remove the allergens and pollen that settles in the fibers and pad. But what if I told you that the same dust, dander and allergens are also imbedded in your furniture and upholstery?
Of course, your chairs and sofas don’t get walked on (at least not as much as the carpets, hopefully!), but they do get used often, resulting in spills and dirt that may permanently damage the material.
Many Upholstery Materials Require Special Care
All fabrics on furniture are not equal; some require special cleaning procedures to prevent damage. New furniture comes with tags that specify how you should clean it and what products you can and can’t use. Below is a listing of the codes used and what they mean.
|UPHOLSTERY CLEANING TAGS|
|W||The code stands for “water”, meaning it may be cleaned with water-based cleaning products.|
|S||Only a “solvent”, or water-free product should be used for cleaning. Using products that contain water can result in a water ring, or can fade the coloring.|
|WS or SW||This usually means that either water-based or dry-cleaning solvents may be used, but there is always a risk of damaging the fabric.|
|X||This code represents the toughest material to clean. It requires extra-special care.|
Even of you try to clean the materials that indicate they can be cleaned with water-based products yourself, over-the-counter cleaning products are just not as effective as those used by professional upholstery cleaners.
Kids and Pets Can Increase the Need for Professional Furniture Cleaning
If you have children, you know that they are not particularly careful in keeping your furniture clean. You may ask them to take their shoes off or to at least keep them off the furniture. But how many times do you need to remind them before they remember? In the meantime, they track dirt and mud and carry lots of germs in on their shoes and clothes that transfers to your valuable furniture
And if you’ve “trained” Fido to not jump on the furniture, good for you! However, does he really stay off when you’re not home? Some pets are pretty sly and that couch is so much more comfy than that flat, hard dog bed. Sure, he wants to please you, but hey, you’re gone—what harm can it do? Just think of all the pet dander and hair getting trapped in the fibers of your furniture from sneaky guy!
We can’t blame all the mistakes on the kids and pets though! Even adults get clumsy and careless. Party spills are all too common and the red wine and greasy hors d’oevres can result in lasting stains if they aren’t professional treated.
